rat’s revenge

Would that I could drive a wooden stake through that rat’s heart and see him turn to dust like the vampires in the movies do. Alas, I forgot Rat will have its revenge whether alive or dead.

As a final resort before paying a professional exterminator to pipe our rats away, we decided to put packets of poison under the house. The foundation is enclosed now, so we weren’t worried about our dog Phoebe, local cats or any stray opossums consuming the stuff. The first four packets all disappeared the first day. The second four disappeared the next, and we began to feel a bit optomistic about our problem. Last week my mom found a huge Ugly Rat lying dead in the back yard. Almost as big as a squirrel, according to my mom. Whether Phoebe killed it or it died by poison we didn’t know. A day or two later we began smelling a “rotten egg” odor in the house. It’s 5 or 6 days now and it’s still there. Probably a rat died under the house or in the wall. Its revenge is the stench its decaying body leaves. A rat died in the wall of another house I once lived in; I had to open all the windows even though it was 35 or 40 degrees outside, and finally the smell got so bad I had to leave the house for 3 days. I hope it doesn’t get that bad this time.
